Workers have broken ground at the site of the county's first Harris Teeter grocery store on Wayne Memorial Drive.
Construction began at Memorial Commons next to Office Depot Oct. 8 as earthmovers descended on the former site of Nichols Shopping Center.
Although the store's Matthews-based corporate office has declined to confirm an opening date more specific than 2013, business owners near the site have been told the construction is a nine-month process, meaning it could be complete by July.
The company signed a lease for the property in late May after months of speculation.
Representatives of the company have said the 53,000-square-foot store will employ 85 workers. Those jobs will be posted on the Harris Teeter jobs site three to four months before the store's opening, expected in late 2013.
