DUDLEY -- A Dudley man died Sunday after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing U.S. 117 Alternate South, just north of Outlaw Road, according to Highway Patrol reports.
Wilbert Filmore Jones, 71, attempted to walk across the two-lane northbound section of the highway to get to his home at 3842 U.S. 117 Alternate South, at about 1:20 p.m.
As he was about to cross the highway, a 1996 Buick passenger car driven by 66-year-old Betty Howell Best of 417 Faison Ave. was heading north down the road.
Trooper Matt Holloman said Ms. Best had just passed Outlaw Road when Jones stepped into her lane, leaving her no time to swerve or get out of the way.
Jones died at the scene in front of May's Chapel Church.
Traffic along the highway was stopped for at least one hour.
No charges are expected to be filed.
