A Goldsboro police officer was escorting a funeral procession south along U.S. 117 Thursday, when his cruiser was struck by another driver.
Officer Michael Machamer, 33, was hit about 1:15 p.m. as he entered the intersection of U.S. 117 South and U.S. Alternate intending to stop traffic so that the procession could continue on. According to the accident report, Farncisco Compean-Hernandez, 48, of Albertson, did not see the officer's blue lights and failed to stop.
Both drivers were injured in the accident, but were released after receiving treatment for minor injuries at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Hernandez was cited for failure to comply to lawful traffic control by a law enforcement officer.
