The driver of a Ford Explorer lost control of her vehicle on George Street at 8 p.m. Thursday, and crashed into a roadside ditch.
Patricia Wilson Newkirk, 59, 1706 Laura Street, told emergency responders that she fell asleep at the wheel. Her vehicle struck a sign post, traveled an additional 138 feet striking a guide wire from a utility pole, continued on sliding in and out of one ditch and crashing into another. The SUV came to rest finally after striking a concrete pole and rolling backward into the ditch.
The accident occurred near Sherman Street, just north of the U.S. 117 intersection.
EMS 41 and firefighters from Engine 1 worked to free Newkirk from the wreckage and stabilize her for transport to Wayne Memorial Hospital. Hospital officials said today that Newkirk is listed in good condition.
She was cited for improper lane change.
