An early Saturday morning accident left a 21-year-old Wayne County woman dead, a spokesman for the N.C. State Highway Patrol said.
Shakia Vonte McCoy was driving northbound on I-795, about a mile north of Fremont, in a blue Ford Explorer when, at just after 3 a.m., the vehicle's back left tire blew out, she lost control and ran off the road into several trees.
She was killed on impact.
Four passengers were also injured in the crash but their names were not released, nor were any additional details.
The blown tire was listed as the cause of the fatal wreck, with alcohol cited as a contributing factor.
