Wayne Community College offering workship on small acreage farming

Wayne Community College Continuing Education will offer a free workshop and a class on succeeding at small acreage farming.
Tony Kleese of the Earthwise Company promises a lively discussion of the market opportunities and production practices that are allowing farmers across the state to make a living at farming, what the local food movement is about, and why consumers are supporting it. He says that the demand for local and organic food is very strong and growing.
The "Introduction to Small Acreage Profitability" workshop will be held Monday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room 161 of the Wayne Learning Center at the college. It is free and registration is not required.
Kleese will also teach an eight-week class on the topic, covering how to plan, market and sustain plants and animals in a small farm setting. That will be held on Mondays, Sept. 24-Nov. 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room 209 of the Magnolia Building.
Cost for the class is $65, but will be offered free to 20 students who have been adversely affected by the decline in tobacco-related industries. Their registration will be covered by a grant from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission that provides financial assistance for short-term occupational training and career development opportunities.
Workshop attendees will be able to sign up for the course at that event.
