Seymour Johnson AFB runway repairs continuing

Something has been missing from Wayne County skies for the past few days -- birds of a different sort that are typically seen ripping through the clouds more often than not.

But for the men and women who command the 4th Fighter Wing's fleet of F-15E Strike Eagles, the runway closure that has kept them off their normal routes this week was a welcomed inconvenience.

They know that the renovation characterized as "long overdue" by an Air Force colonel earlier this year is worth it.

And once the $18 million runway project -- an effort that will, by its end, see three major sections of degraded slabs identified by the Air Force Civil Engineer Support Agency Pavements Evaluation Team repaired -- is complete, conditions will drastically improve for Goldsboro-based aircrews and the aircraft they command.

4th FW Public Affairs officer Staff Sgt. Chuck Broadway said there are currently 115 concrete slabs complete -- that with only 83 more to go construction crews are "a little bit ahead of schedule."

And while this week marked only the first of seven closures expected before the revamped runway is revealed, officials, he said, are still eyeing spring for its completion.
