Mowing crews found the body of a man Thursday in a ditch near Faison with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest, law enforcement personnel said.
The workers found the body on Brewer Road. Investigators, the medical examiner and Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton arrived on the scene soon after the discovery.
Thornton said in a press release that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is ongoing.
Sampson County medical examiner Dr. F. Carl Barr estimated the man's age to be between 35 and 45. Barr said there was little exposure to the body, indicating that it had not been in the ditch for a long time.
The victim, who is black, has not been identified.
The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.
Maj. Tom Effler of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said no one in his department has yet been contacted or asked to assist in the identification.
