After no less than two false alarms and months of speculation, it has been confirmed by a Harris Teeter spokesperson that the company will bring one of its grocery stores to Goldsboro.

Danna Jones, the Matthews-based company's communication specialist, said Wednesday in an email that Harris Teeter has signed a lease in Goldsboro.

The location for the new store is widely believed to be Memorial Commons on Wayne Memorial Drive at the site of the old Nichols Shopping Center near Office Depot.

It's against corporate policy to discuss any stores in advance of a lease being signed, but that didn't stop a few leaks on Facebook from stirring up rumors half a year in advance.

A posting from the official Harris Teeter Facebook account in mid-December proclaimed to members of the Bring Harris Teeter to Goldsboro Facebook group that a store had been confirmed in the area and was scheduled to open in 2013. Ms. Jones later deemed that posting erroneous.

She told The News-Argus it was unlikely that the post had come from nothing, but still said it was against policy to discuss any future locations in advance of a lease-signing.

But another posting on Facebook earlier this month showed the Harris Teeter store in Wilson was accepting applications from internal employees for positions at a Goldsboro store that would be located at the U.S. 70 and Wayne Memorial Drive interchange.
