DOT holding contract meetings with minority businesses for U.S. 70

Contracts for the section of the U.S. 70 Goldsboro Bypass from west of N.C. 581 to I-795 are on target to be awarded next month with construction beginning later this summer.
Businesses classified by the state as Disadvantaged Business Enterprises that are interested in subcontracting opportunities for the project are invited to attend an outreach meeting on Thursday sponsored by the state Department of Transportation.
The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Wayne County Community College in room 101 of the Walnut building, 3000 Wayne Memorial Drive.
People attending the meeting will have the opportunity to meet with potential prime contractors for this project. DOT engineers will provide an overview of the project, and Business Opportunity and Workforce Development Office staff will explain the certifications and qualifications needed to work with the department.
Disadvantaged Business Enterprises are minority- and women-owned businesses that have been in business at least three years, have sales of more than $300,000 and are positioned for growth in the highway construction and related industries.
The DOT is seeking such firms that specialize in activities such as hauling and trucking, clearing and grubbing, incidental concrete and masonry, guardrail and fencing, erosion control, and other highway-related trades.
Construction of the bypass has been divided into three sections. Once complete, the 20-mile bypass will begin at U.S. 70 just west of N.C. 581 in Wayne County and end at U.S. 70 just east of Promise Land Road in Lenoir County.
The first section of the U.S. 70 Goldsboro Bypass, between I-795 and Wayne Memorial Drive, opened to traffic in December 2011. It is designated as N.C. 44 until the road is completed.
A $104.4 million design-build contract was awarded to Barnhill Contracting Co. of Tarboro in February for a 12.5 mile-long section from Wayne Memorial Drive to U.S. 70 in Lenoir County. The estimated cost for the entire project is $246 million.
