Kindergarten registration day in Wayne County Public Schools will be held at all 15 elementary schools Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Children must turn 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 to be enrolled for the coming year. An official birth certificate and immunization records are required, as well as proof of residence.

Parents or guardians are requested to provide two sources of documentation, such as utility bills, tax bills, deed of trust, rent receipt or proof of current resident status. Military families living on base may present a letter from base housing to meet this requirement.

Parents must enroll the child in the school district in which they live, with assignments made by the school system.

North Carolina law requires that each kindergarten child receive a health assessment and shots. The health assessment must be documented on an official North Carolina Health Assessment Report form, available through the school district, the Wayne County Health Department, and most pediatricians' offices. If needed, parents/legal guardians will be given a health assessment form during registration which must be completed by the family physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes on Monday, Aug. 27.

A complete list of enrollment requirements can be found at the district website, waynecountyschools.org, along with the school the child will attend.

Anyone unable to register on the designated day should contact the school as soon as possible. If uncertain about which school the child will attend, call the administrative offices at 919-731-5900, visit the district website or stop by the offices at 2001 E. Royall Ave.

School transfer requests will be accepted through the month of June for schools that have space available. The list of schools with openings will be made public.

Students currently enrolled in kindergarten will not attend school on Friday, which will count as a vacation day for them.
