A 16-year-old teen was killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday night after hitting a tree head-on near Dudley.
Marco Antonio Nino, of Kinston, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital at about 11:18 p.m., where he was later pronounced dead.
"The subject was traveling south on Emmaus Church Road and crossed a single line and ran off the road to the left and struck a tree," said Trooper Leroy Bunn, one of the officers from N.C. State Highway Patrol who responded to the scene.
Nino, driving with a provisional license, was the only person in the vehicle when it struck the tree.
"I think speed was a factor in it," Bunn said.
Nino's family was notified of the accident Friday night.
Drivers with provisional licenses are allowed to drive outside the hours of 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. only for work, volunteer emergency services or with a driving supervisor.
Trooper Jock Smith and Sgt. Jared Burden also responded to the scene.
