Yvette Smith receives award for work in state education

Wayne County native Yvette C. Smith received an award from the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators for her state leadership for North Carolina on March 25-28 in Washington, D.C., at the association's conference.

She was selected among her peers for the award and is consider the top in the state of North Carolina for her leadership in federal education.

Ms. Smith is currently the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system's Title I director.

In her current position, she manages a $60 million operating budget for the sixty Title I schools and the three School Improvement Grant schools in the system.

In previous jobs, she has worked in the leadership capacity at the state level as a Title I, Title V and the Title I Distinguished Schools education consultant at the state Department of Public Instruction.

Ms. Smith is currently the chairman of the Region Six and Eight Title I directors in the southwest region of North Carolina, in which capacity she acts as liason between the district Title I directors and the state Department of Public Instruction.

In addition, she is the state legislative committee representive for the North Carolina Association of Compensatory Education.

She has more than 19 years of experience in education and has served as a teacher and an assistant principal in the Wayne County Public School System at Northeast Elementary, a principal in the Durham County Public School System, an instrurctional support Title I consultant in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education ,where she assisted in monitoring federal programs for the states of Florida, Arkansas, Idaho and Missouri.

She is a graduate of Eastern Wayne High School and of North Carolina Central University, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education and a master's degree in education curriculum and instruction.

She also is a graduate of Campbell University, with a master's degree in school administration.

Ms. Smith is currently working to complete her doctoral degree in education leadership at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

She is a member of the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators, North Carolina Association of Compensatory Education and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Ms. Smith is daugther of Chester and Carolyn Smith of Goldsboro and the grandaughter of Lula Smith of Fremont.
