A story in Wednesday's paper about the state adding five days to the school calendar and districts being allowed to request a waiver may have been confusing, officials say.

The five additional days added to the public school calendar next year apply to everyone, said Ken Derksen, Wayne County Public Schools' director of communication. But the waiver determines how the days will be used.

"Everybody has the five days regardless," he said. "By law the state legislators increased the calendar by five days. They're instructional days unless you use them as professional days. We requested those five days for professional development."
