Meals to help send children to camp

Members of the Salvation Army ladies auxiliary will be serving up barbecue during their annual fundraiser Thursday.
Meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army building at 610 N. William St. The cost is $7 per plate. The meal will include barbecue, potato salad, slaw, hush puppies, dessert and drink.
Diners may eat in or take their meals to go. There will also be a drive through. Delivery service is available for orders of 10 or more. Members of the Golden K Kiwanis Club will deliver the meals. But the order has to be called in to the Salvation Army by the end of business today.
The food is from Wilber's Barbecue. Coca Cola is providing drinks.
Proceeds go to the Salvation Army to send local children to camp, according to Lt. Julie Igleheart with the Salvation Army.
"We have a camp in Denton and have anywhere from 10 to 15 children going each year," she said. "They go for a week. It's a Christian-oriented camp."
But the cost of the camp has gone up this year, Mrs. Igleheart said. Now it costs $200 per child.
"For a lot of kids, this camp is their out," Mrs. Igleheart said. "They're with their parents all year long and this gives them a break. And how many times can kids go to camp and learn about God?
"The older boys and girls camp out in tents the entire week and cook over an open fire stove and that's tremendous. The younger ones learn different things and do crafts. The girls use an Indian concept, and have a circle and they all get Indian names and make Indian dresses."
Mrs. Igleheart also said that a lot of the kids who live in the city don't know how to act in the country.
When the kids return home, they don't forget what they learned at the Salvation Army.
"We still have kids talking about camp from last year," Mrs. Igleheart said. "They're so excited."
In addition to sending local children to camp, part of the proceeds will be used for Vacation Bible School.
This year it will be June 11 through 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the back parking lot of the Salvation Army. The theme will be "Adventures on Promise Island." There will be music and more. Snacks will be served from the Salvation Army's canteen.
The last day there will be bouncy houses for the kids to play on.
Last year the barbecue fundraiser brought in $5,000, Mrs. Igleheart said. This year, the goal is $7,000.
