The effort has grown over the years, with The News-Argus, the Woman's Club and the Continental Society joining hands to deliver a party and gifts to selected children.
"I'd personally like to thank all the volunteers who came out and helped at the party, as well as the many individuals and businesses who contributed and made it possible for these children to enjoy a merry Christmas," said Debbie Pennell, human resources manager at the newspaper and the chief organizer of the event, which was held Dec. 17 at Dillard Middle School.
Mrs. Pennell also expressed her gratitude to the Braswell family, who have helped for 40 years with obtaining the candy, cookies and fruit for the Christmas stockings that are distributed among the children who attend the party. Each child receives a stocking full of goodies, a toy of their choice and a full suit of clothing.
She also thanked Chris Parks and the Project Jump jump-roping team who provided entertainment at the event.
The final donations to the fund include:
* Harold and Jody Brashear, $100
* Phil and Janice Bedford and The Family Shoe Store, $100, in memory of Guy and Pete Bedford and Doris Gay
* Mizpah Court 79 Daughters of Isis, $50
* News-Argus Sponsored Embers Christmas Concert, $2,727.93
The total amount collected was $42,712.84.
