Congressman G. K. Butterfield announced Friday the awarding of a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to Greene County Health Care. The grant will be used to provide primary health care services to underserved populations in Greene and Pitt counties, as well as migrant and seasonal farm workers in five adjacent counties.

GCHC provided services to more than 95,000 patients last year, almost all with incomes below the poverty threshold.

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan announced that North Carolina will receive more than $1.5 million to improve access to health care and educational services in rural communities. Included in the grant will be $192,870 for James Sprunt Community College in Duplin County that will enable its faculty to offer college-level and advanced placement courses to surrounding high schools.

Sampson Regional Medical Center will get $169,852.
