A $649,000 contract has been awarded to replace the bridge on Lake Wackena Road over Walnut Creek (Lake Wackena), southeast of Goldsboro. In addition to rebuilding the bridge, construction includes work on the approaches on Lake Wackena Road.
Work could begin as early as March 1, 2012, with final completion scheduled for no later than Aug. 1, 2012.
The bridge will be closed to traffic during construction and a detour will be in place. Traffic will use Dollard Town Road, N.C. 111 and U.S. 70 to travel around the construction site.
The contract was awarded by the state Department of Transportation to Fred Smith Co. of Raleigh.
The contract is one of 12 totaling $32.1 million awarded by DOT Secretary Gene Conti for highway and bridge projects across the state.
Contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 6 percent, or about $2.1 million, below DOT estimates.
