SMITHFIELD -- On Saturday, Dec. 17, Santa Claus is coming to Downtown Smithfield and will stop by the Howell Theatre. Santa will be available to visit with children and adults from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. A free showing of "The Polar Express" will begin at 12:30 p.m.
"'The Polar Express' has become a Christmas classic," said Amy Kirkman, owner of the Howell Theatre. "The film is visually stunning and the message that the Christmas spirit will always live within those who believe is truly powerful."
"The Polar Express" is an inspiring adventure based on the beloved children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. The showing will be held in one theater, so seating will be limited.
The Howell Theatre is located in Downtown Smithfield, at 141 S. Third St., and is home of the $3 movies -- every movie, every day for every body. For a schedule of current movies, call (919) 934-8202 or visit www.howellmovies.com.
Downtown Smithfield is home to several other special events during the holiday season. The annual Christmas Parade will travel down Market Street beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8.
Free carriage rides with Santa will be offered at the corner of Market and Third streets from 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16. Merchants will hold special events and extended shopping hours as well.
