City employees meet with boss

Goldsboro city employees gathered together Tuesday morning for a large staff meeting at the Paramount Theatre, although City Manager Scott Stevens said many of the issues discussed were internal and the meeting served mostly to acquaint himself with middle managers he otherwise doesn't interact with often.

Stevens holds regular staff meetings with city department heads, but the superintendents, assistants and other supervisors aren't typically involved with them. This, he said, was an opportunity to come together and get everyone on the same page. Stevens, who began work Aug. 8, added that, at this point, he's met just about all of the city's employees.

"It's just a chance to have everybody in one place and make sure we had them together," he said.

Stevens said the meeting didn't involve many specifics about employment and wasn't focused on the 5 percent increase in health insurance premiums due to kick in Jan. 1, 2012, although there was discussion of forming a benefits committee to help present ideas about city employee benefits to the Goldsboro City Council.

A presentation on the Center Street Streetscape project was also given, which Stevens said was similar to the one presented to the council.

"We want to make sure folks internally have it," he said, adding he wanted his employees to "hear it straight" from their supervisor so they would understand what was factually accurate and what was not.
