KINSTON -- Cannons will thunder and sailors and Marines will gather at the Neuse River Saturday and Sunday as the CSS Neuse State Historic Site in Kinston hosts its annual Civil War living history program, which this year will feature a special presentation on naval operations.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and from noon until 4 p.m. on Sunday.

There will be a special presentation on uniforms at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Also, there will be several living history organizations demonstrating navigation techniques, small arms, steam engines, rope and knot work, cooking, spinning, weaving, dying and knitting. And there will be sutlers and craftsmen at the program with items for sale to the general public. Artillery and infantry demonstrations will be held throughout both days.

Tours of the CSS Neuse will be available throughout the program and the Gov. Richard Caswell Memorial also will be open.

All activities are free but donations are accepted.

The site is located at 2612 W. Vernon Ave. For directions, visit www.nchistoricsites.org/neuse/neuse.htm, call (252) 522-2091 or email holly.weaver@ncdcr.gov.
