Ten WMH nurses recognized for excellence

Ten employees at Wayne Memorial Hospital were recognized recently with nursing excellence awards.

The nurses, nursing assistants, technicians and surgical staff were chosen from among 48 nominees on the basis of integrity, enthusiasm, compassion and competency.

This year's winners include:

*Karen Benton, RN, a graduate of East Carolina University and a nurse for two and one-half years.

*Sheila Bynum, a dialysis technician and nursing assistant for 18 years. A graduate of Wayne Community College, she has worked at the hospital for six years.

*Amanda Hampton, an RN for 10 years, is a graduate of WCC and a hospital employee for seven years.

*Carolyn Lancaster, a nursing assistant for 18 years, graduated from WCC and began working at Wayne Memorial 13 years ago.

*Patricia Prentice-Austin, an RN, has been at the hospital for nine of her 31 years in the profession. She holds a bachelor's degree in nursing and a master's degree in public health administration.

*Betty Jo Smith, a graduate of WCC, has worked at 17 years. A registered nurse, she has 38 years experience.

*Robin Thaxton, an RN for 19 years, is a graduate of WCC. She started working at the hospital seven years ago.

*Jennifer Waters has spent her six-year career as an RN at the hospital.

*Robert White, an RN and CRNA for seven years, is a graduate of the Raleigh School of Anesthesia.

*Yvonne Williams, RN, graduated from James Sprunt Community College. She has spent 25 of her 26-year career at Wayne Memorial.

Each of the winners received an acrylic flame-shaped award commemorating Florence Nightingale, known for carrying an oil lamp at night as she made her rounds to wounded soldiers during the Crimean War.
