Maj. Gen. John W. Hesterman III

A former 4th Fighter Wing officer will soon add his third star.

President Barack Obama has nominated Maj. Gen. John W. Hesterman III for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general.

Hesterman, an F-15E pilot who trained at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in 1995 and then served as commander of the 4th Operations Group, is currently Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans and Requirements at Air Force Headquarters in Washington.

The general has logged more than 2,200 hours in the F-4, F-16, F-117, T-38 and F-15E.

His major awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with "V" device, Bronze Star Medal and Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

Should Hesterman's promotion be confirmed, he would be assigned to the post of Military Deputy for Readiness to the Under Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon.
