An autopsy will be performed on a 21-year-old Goldsboro woman who died early Thursday morning while in custody in the Wayne County Jail.

No foul play is suspected in the death of Karen Rebecca Jones, who was serving a seven-day sentence for driving while intoxicated, Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders said.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, at Winders' request, is assisting in the investigation.

"The SBI is doing most of the investigation," Winders said. "I called them in. We don't have to, but I prefer an outside agency to do it."

Ms. Jones became ill about 6 a.m. Thursday. She had been in the jail since Tuesday and had not complained of any illness, detention officials said.

Detention officers called Wayne County EMS paramedics to respond to the jail, and upon their arrival, they pronounced Ms. Jones as dead.

Winders said he could not speak to whether or not Ms. Jones had any health problems.
