Teen dies in vehicle crash

DUDLEY -- A Wayne County teenager was killed and his older brother was airlifted to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh early Wednesday evening after their Jeep Cherokee ran under the chassis of a flat-bed trailer that was being backed into a yard off Indian Springs Road about six miles east of Mount Olive.
The brothers were returning from a church service in Mount Olive when the wreck occurred shortly after 7 p.m., said Highway Patrol Sgt. M.A. Kirby.
Rene Nuncio, 14, died in the crash and that his brother, Juan Nuncio, 17, was injured. The driver of the truck, Hector Paredes, 37, of Indian Springs Road, was not injured, Kirby said.
Kirby said the boys' family lives off N.C. 111 South.
"The flatbed driver was attempting to back it into a driveway without assistance off Indian Springs Road," he said. "The trailer was across the travel lane and it slammed under the trailer."
Speed was not a factor in the accident, he said. The Jeep was traveling west on Indian Springs Road and the truck was backing into an area on the south side of the road, Kirby said.
"There was no braking prior to (the impact)," he said. "It was dark, rainy. I am sure that the driver of the SUV never saw the trailer across his travel lane."
Paredes lives near the area where he was attempting to back the truck into, Kirby said.
It took Indian Springs and Mount Olive firefighters about 45 minutes to free Juan Nunci, who was airlifted from the scene, Indian Springs Fire Chief Phil Shivar said.
"The car was pinned under the chassis of the trailer," Shivar said. "We had to lift the trailer up and pull the car out."
It was around 9 p.m. before the body of Rene Nuncio could be removed, he said. Firefighters could not remove the youth until told to do so by the Highway Patrol, he added.
No charges had been filed as of this morning. The investigation is continuing.
