The City Council will hear a twice-postponed recommendation from the staff concerning the Center Street renovation streetscape project during Monday's meeting at the council chambers.

The opening of bids was postponed one week to Sept. 3, when the recommendation was first expected, though city officials said they had not had time enough to review the bids carefully enough, so it was held until the Sept. 19 meeting. Again it wasn't presented to council, but a recommendation has been entered into the agenda this week to reject the bids and put the project out for bid again.

The bids came out higher than the planning department's estimated cost of $1,380,800, as the lowest bid was $1,739,250.54.

Other items on the city's consent agenda include the awarding of a bid for a sanitary sewer rehabilitation project and the site and landscape plans for a new building at Casey Commercial Properties on Vann Street.

Two annexation petitions for property in Waynesborough Park, four acres of land owned by the Harry Ivey Estate on North Oak Forest Road and 6.71 acres of land on Wayne Memorial Drive owned by Marshall Cox are contained in the consent agenda as well as a conditional use permit for Ron Martin and a rezoning request from Kathy Woodard.

A resolution is also expected to pass authorizing the police department to accept $51,818 from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. Half of the total will be shared with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office as the county department aims to use it for communication system upgrades.

Last year, both law enforcement offices used the funds to install cameras in all of their patrol cars.
