CALYPSO -- The shooting death of a man Friday afternoon at a residence in Calypso is under investigation by the Duplin County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Blake Wallace said Saturday.
Wallace said the victim was Donald Beaman, 46, of Dudley.
The suspect, Danny Gwaltney, 55, of Calypso was booked on an open count of murder and jailed without bond at the Duplin County Jail in Kenansville.
Wallace said Beaman was shot with a handgun at the Gwaltney residence on South Center Street in Calypso, near the Calypso Town Hall.
Other details were not available because of the ongoing investigation.
According to Wallace, the two men knew each other and the shooting occurred following "a confrontation between them" when Gwaltney "pulled out a .22 caliber pistol" and shot Beaman.
Wallace said it wasn't immediately determined if the confrontation was verbal or physical. He said more information would be available when the investigation is complete.
"This is a tragic situation and my heart goes out to both families," Wallace said.
