Fire report
The Goldsboro Fire Department responded to 170 calls from Aug. 26 to Sept. 8.
The calls included 48 false alarms, 31 medical assists and 13 vehicle accidents.
The two-week period includes calls made in response to the destruction caused by Hurricane Irene. On the day Irene struck Goldsboro, Aug. 27, the fire department responded to 18 calls to remove trees from roadways.
On Aug. 28, the fire department responded to the call of a working fire, "with flames showing," at McDonald's restaurant at 2002 Wayne Memorial Drive around 5:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters were informed by personnel that there was a fire on the newly renovated roof of the building. Firefighters made access to the roof and used water extinguishers to put out flames coming from an exterior wall and brick veneer.
Firefighters listed the apparent cause of the fire to be a nail that had heated up enough to begin smoldering after it was hit by a drill used by a construction worker making a hole in a wooden header to run wiring.
Firefighters responded to a house fire at 429 Beal Street on Sept. 2 around 10 p.m. At the scene, firefighters saw smoke coming from the building and were notified by a neighbor the home was vacant. It was later confirmed the home has no activated natural gas or electricity. Goldsboro police were contacted.
According to the subsequent police report, flames were approximately 3 feet high and about 6 feet across when fire officials arrived.
The origin of the fire was in kitchen area of the home. There appeared to have been something liquid poured or spilled as the fire had burnt through the floor, according to the report. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
August police report
The Goldsboro Police Department recently released is monthly report for August.
The department reported it responded to 277 offenses during the month, down 17 percent from July.
A total value of stolen property during the month was approximately $165,000, while the value of all recovered property was approximately $44,250.
Police officers arrested 305 people during the month, and issued 866 citations.
