Goldsboro native Dick Baddour has resigned today as athletic director at the University of North Carolina, according to reports published on the Internet by the Raleigh News & Observer and the Charlotte Observer.
Baddour announced his resignation at a press conference last this morning in Chapel Hill, at which he and Chancellor Holden Thorp were discussing the firing of football coach Butch Davis on Monday.
North Carolina is under investigation by the NCAA for violations by its football program in regard to improper contacts with professional agents and academic fraud.
Baddour has served as the athletic director at North Carolina for 15 years and hired Davis four years ago to take the school's football program to a higher level. He will continue to work for the school at least through its meeting with the NCAA infractions committee in October, school officials said.
