A Goldsboro man remains in Pitt Memorial Hospital for gunshot wounds he received around 2 a.m. Friday morning on a sidewalk of Lincoln Homes, a housing community of Goldsboro Housing Authority.

Miguel Valdez Phillips, 23, of East New Hope Road, was shot at least twice, once in the abdomen and once in the shoulder, at 806 Olivia Lane, Goldsboro police Sgt. Dwayne Dean said.

Phillips' arrest record includes charges of carrying a concealed weapon, firing a weapon into occupied property, trespassing, injury to personal property, possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, and aggravated maiming of a tongue or eye.

"He is very well known to us," Dean said.

Dean said that Phillips was uncooperative with police before he was taken to the hospital Friday morning, and that police have not been able to communicate with him since he was transferred from Wayne Memorial Hospital to Pitt Memorial.

Police said Friday that Phillips was taken to Pitt to receive treatment for a bullet lodged in his abdomen.

Phillips was previously banned from the city's housing authority properties on May 21 for fleeing from police in a vehicle and discharging a weapon into property, Gene Thomas, executive director of Goldsboro Housing Authority said.

Thomas said after a person is banned from the properties, they are subject to arrest if they return.

Thomas added the area of Lincoln Homes where Phillips was shot is high foot-traffic area, often populated with people who are not residents of Lincoln Homes.

"We are very concerned for our residents' safety," he said.

Thomas said that the residents of 806 Olivia Lane were not involved in the shooting.
