Wayne County Public Schools has announced its 2011-2012 Teachers of the Year to represent each of its 31 schools in the upcoming academic year.

Nominated by their peers, the educators will compete for the district honor, which will be announced in late August.

For the next round of the competition, each of the candidates will complete portfolios that will be submitted to the WCPS Teacher of the Year selection committee.

The committee will review the portfolios and conduct interviews of all the candidates in August. The field will then be narrowed to three -- one each from the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Those chosen to represent their school have demonstrated best practices in the classroom, as well as a strong commitment to helping students be successful in their personal and academic endeavors, said Dr. Steven Taylor, schools superintendent.

"By being selected to represent their school as Teacher of the Year, these 31 teachers have earned the respect of their students, peers and administrators through their hard work demonstrated both inside and outside the classroom," he said.
