The return of the farmer's market to Goldsboro will be marked this Wednesday by a premiere event, featuring singers from Dillard Academy Charter and appearances by Mayor Al King and interim City Manager Tasha Logan Wednesday at 9:15 a.m.

The city officials and singing children will prelude the market's official opening at 9:30 a.m. The market, which will open each Wednesday of summer, is located at Herman Park Center at the intersection of Herman and Pou Streets. Vendors beneath eight canopies will sell fresh, local produce throughout the day until 2:30 p.m.

The weekly market, previously promoted by the Wayne County Health Department and held in its parking lot, is now a joint venture between the Health Department and the city's parks and recreation department.

Karen Brashear, public works director and an organizer of the market, said that the produce sale has grown in popularity in recent years, especially as the time and location of it has grown to become more consistent.

"It's bigger than last year and it's becoming more popular," she said, noting that she's been told there is a lot of interest from produce vendors this year. "People know where to go on Wednesdays."
