Daniels and Daniels, architect Hobbs honored for work at Fort Macon

The North Carolina Department of Administration and the State Construction Office awarded the Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Project Implementation for projects over $5,000,000 to Daniels and Daniels Construction Co., and Hobbs Architects, P.A.
The awards were presented at the North Carolina State Construction Conference on March 24.
The award was given for the construction of the Coastal Education and Visitor's Center at Fort Macon State Park.
The Fort Macon Coastal Education and Visitor's Center project involved construction of a 22,000-square-foot building with associated site improvements on the east end of Bogue Island adjacent to Beaufort Inlet.
The construction was designed and built to compliment the architecture of the historic fort and the local environment. The project was designed and managed to limit the impact to the highly sensitive historic site as well as the fragile coastal ecology.
he original goal for the project was for the project to achieve a LEED Silver certification, however upon completion the team was awarded LEED Gold certification by the United States Green Building Council.
The Fort Macon Coastal Educational and Visitor's Center fills a longstanding need for Fort Macon State Park, which has the largest number of visitors per year of any state park.
It provides a much needed education facility with meeting rooms for community use: an exhibit hall, restrooms, a book store and gift shop and office space for the park's personnel.
The project was also twice selected by East Carolina University's College of Technology and Computer Science, Department of Construction Management to be the course study project for their Capstone Program.
Students used this project as the basis for their studies in the estimating, scheduling and other construction management methodology. ECU placed a web based camera on the project site and students were able to monitor and track the development of the project.
Daniels and Daniels personnel worked closely with ECU to allow the students insight into all aspects of the project development and construction.
Hobbs Architects, P.A., formerly of Goldsboro, developed a design which complimented the architecture of the civil war era fort while incorporating modern building systems. Hobbs and Daniels and Daniels worked closely together to construct of an environmentally friendly and highly efficient facility.
