Wayne County Public Schools will hold its kindergarten pre-registration day on Friday at all 15 elementary schools from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

A child must be five years old on or before Aug. 31 to register for kindergarten for the coming year. Parents/legal guardians must present an official birth certificate and immunization records to school officials. Birth certificates may be obtained from the Register of Deeds office in the county of the child's birth.

Parents/guardians must also show proof of residence. These include two sources of documentation such as utility bills, tax bills, deed of trust, rent receipt, or any document which clearly proves current resident status. Military families living on base may present a letter from base housing as proof of residence. Children must be enrolled in the school district in which they live.

State law requires that each kindergarten child receive a health assessment and his/her shots.

The health assessment must be documented on an official N.C. Health Assessment Report form available form the county school system, the county health department and most pediatricians' offices. If needed, parents/legal guardians will be given a health assessment form during pre-registration which must be completed by the family physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes on Aug. 25.

A complete list of enrollment requirements can be obtained from the school or the district website, www.waynecountyschools.org.

If unable to attend on registration day, contact the school as soon as possible. For more information on transfers or the assigned school, call 731-5900 or visit the administrative offices at 2001 E. Royall Avenue.

Students currently enrolled in kindergarten will not attend school on Friday, deemed a vacation day for them.
