SNOW HILL -- Snow Hill Primary School's Gena Byrd is among seven teachers from across the nation recently recognized for their outstanding efforts to promote literacy about the state and nation's top industry--agriculture.

The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture recognized Byrd and the other teachers and awarded them each a $1,500 scholarship to attend the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference in June in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Several hundred teachers are expected to attend the conference, and they will explore ways to incorporate real-life agricultural applications into language arts, math, nutrition, science and social studies lessons.

Byrd and the other scholarship recipients were judged on their past use of innovative programs to educate students about agriculture. Judges also considered the teachers' future plans to implement information gained at the AITC conference into their own classrooms and share the information with other teachers.
