Pittman honored for her many efforts supporting downtown

Debbie Pittman of Goldsboro has been recognized as a "Main Street Champion" by the North Carolina Main Street program.
Ms. Pittman, who has been heavily involved in promoting downtown Goldsboro, received the award along with 33 other honorees from across the state at the North Carolina Main Street Annual Awards Dinner in Shelby earlier this year.
She was nominated for the award by the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp.
In her recommendation letter, officials with the corporation described her contributions.
"Debbie Pittman is a valuable asset for downtown Goldsboro. She opened a downtown business three years ago, and when a residential space above her business became available, she moved in. Although Debbie has since chosen a different career path and closed the business, she remains committed to living in and being actively involved in the downtown she loves.
Debbie makes downtown a big part of her life. She offers to help the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation staff and board members at every event she possibly can, from set up to break down and everything in between. She helps with other activities as well, including spending weekends cleaning out properties donated to DGDC and participating in downtown-related public forums. Debbie is also a huge supporter of our downtown businesses and restaurants, frequenting them all. She has become a dependable, dedicated and loyal steward for downtown by simply making downtown the place where she chooses to live her life."
Main Street is a downtown revitalization program for smaller towns based on economic development within the context of historic preservation. The North Carolina Main Street program, provides technical assistance to its communities and is part of the Department's of Commerce's Office of Urban Development.
In 1980, North Carolina was one of six original states, selected from 38 that applied, to launch the work of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's National Main Street Center. The North Carolina Main Street program began with five participating cities -- New Bern, Salisbury, Shelby, Tarboro and Washington -- in September 1980 and has since grown to include 61 communities across the state.
