Neuse Historic Site to host naval living history

KINSTON -- On Saturday, March 12 the CSS Neuse State Historic Site will host naval living history demonstrations along with commemoration ceremonies for both the crew of the Neuse and the United States Colored Troops from Lenoir County. Hours of operation will be from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. with the commemoration ceremony beginning at 3 p.m.

Naval living history will be presented throughout the day and include a torpedo display as well as navigation, steam engine and Civil War surgical displays. Demonstrations will include ropemaking, quoits and the firing of both small arms and a field artillery piece. Artillery demonstrations will be held at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The ceremony begins at 3:00p.m. with a talk about the ship and is highlighted by the reading of the crews roster followed by an artillery salute. This will be followed by a presentation and salute to the United States Colored Troops who served the Union from Lenoir County.

The Richard Caswell Memorial will also be open throughout the day and guided tours of the Neuse will be given on the half hour. Admission is free. This program is a collaboration of the N.C. Division of Historic Sites, The CSS Neuse Gunboat Association and the Cultural Heritage Museum.
