With nice weather coming, seniors in several Eastern Carolina are beginning to prepare for the 2011 Neuse River Senior Games and Silver Arts competition. The Silver Arts and games will be held in New Bern from April 26 through May 6.

Athletes, ages 55 years old and older, will compete in the various activities such as bowling, swimming, horseshoes, cycling, track and field, croquet, bocce and shuffleboard. The games, held in different locations around New Bern, are a great way to stay active and meet new friends.

"We all enjoy getting outside again, talking, and most of all, playing, I'd definitely call it friendly competition," said Corine Lee, NRSG ambassador for Craven County.

Senior Games participants compete against others in the same age and gender categories in a variety of athletic events designed for individuals of various fitness levels.

More than 250 seniors participated in lasts year's events.

"Our goal is to reach as many active adults in our counties and encourage them to take part not only in the games, but in the Silver Arts as well," said Johanne Pryor, NRSG coordinator.

Silver Arts celebrates the accomplishments of North Carolina's senior artists and includes heritage crafts such as basket weaving, quilting, and wood turning; visual arts such as drawing, painting, and photography; literary arts such as poetry, short stories, and essays; and performing arts such as singing, dancing, and instrumental.

The Neuse River Senior Games include six counties -- Craven, Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir and Pamlico. Qualifiers in the local games may go to the North Carolina Senior Games Finals held every fall in Raleigh. Every other year participants who qualify at the State Games may continue on to the National Senior Games.

Registration for the 2011 NRSG and Silver Arts ends Friday, March 18.
