R.A. Jeffreys has bought one of the state's most prominent beer distributors, Harris Wholesale of Raleigh and Fayetteville.
The move will make Jeffreys one of the nation's 10 top wholesale distributors of Anheuser-Busch products and give the company control of distribution for most of eastern North Carolina.
The deal is expected to be closed Jan. 7, according to published reports. Terms were not released.
Jeffreys now has operations in Goldsboro, Greenville, Lumberton, Wilmington, New Bern and Raleigh.
According to the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission website, Jeffreys' Goldsboro location has distribution rights in all or part of 11 counties, including Wayne, Duplin, Johnston and Greene.
Harris is one of North Carolina's oldest beer distributors, founded in 1949. Company officials said the change would not affect the majority of the more than 200 employees at its Raleigh and Fayetteville operations.
Business listings record Jeffreys as a wholesaler of beer and ale, wine, distilled beverages and refrigerating equipment and supplies.
The company's Goldsboro location is on U.S. 70 West. In Greenville, it is located on Greene Street.
