A house fire on the 300 block of Spoonbill Drive, in the Heron Creek subdivision, caused severe damage to nearly half of the home, officials say.

"There was a working structure fire when we arrived," said Saulston Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Robbie Strickland. "The fire had reached through the home's roof before we arrived."

Strickland said firefighters arrived on the scene around 2:35 a.m. Sunday.

Nearly 30 firefighters were at the scene of the fire, with volunteer departments from Saulston, Patetown, Faro and New Hope responding.

People were inside the home when the fire began, but no one was injured.

"The smoke alarms did their job and got them out of the house," Strickland said.

Strickland said the firefighters worked quickly and efficiently.

"We made a quick, coordinated attack," Strickland said. "We did a great job stopping the fire and keeping it contained in the garage."

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

"We believe the fire began somewhere in the garage vicinity. Significant damage was done throughout the attic and roof area," Strickland said.

Firefighters spent about four hours on the scene, Strickland said.

"For our guys to get up at 2:30 in the morning and do what they did, as quickly as they did, is impressive," Strickland said.
