Sheriff's deputy crashes car on way to hunting territory dispute

Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Martin McAlduff suffered minor injuries when he crashed his car while responding to a call Saturday.
A Wayne County Sheriff's deputy struck a tree with his vehicle while responding to a call Saturday morning.
Deputy Martin McAlduff suffered only minor injuries in the accident, which occurred on Corbett Hill Road in Grantham around 6:45 a.m.
McAlduff was responding in emergency mode to a call involving one person shooting at another.
While traveling at a high rate of speed, McAlduff's vehicle made contact with grass on the right side of the road, said Wayne County Sheriff's Office Lt. Craig Edwins.
"He overcorrected and struck a tree on the left side of the road," Edwins said.
McAlduff incurred cuts and scrapes on his hands and also made reference to pain in one of his legs, which showed no visible signs of injury, Edwins said.
The call McAlduff never made it to came from two hunters who were being fired upon.
James Crumpler was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and arrested after admitting to shooting in the direction of the hunters.
Edwins said that Crumpler had hunting rights to the land and was trying to run the other hunters off.
"He tried to take matters into his own hands when he should have contacted the authorities," Edwins said.
Crumpler had no criminal history and was released later in the day on an unsecured bond.
