Volunteers still looking for information on local war dead

Nothing has been set in stone -- and won't be -- at least, not without one final push to gather information about those sons of Wayne who have died in combat since World War I.

But members of the trustees for the Wayne Memorial Association -- the group that recently unveiled a design for the Wayne Veterans Memorial, a site meant to pay homage to local heroes -- said they are getting close to completing the list that will ultimately grace a large granite map of Wayne County at the site of the former Memorial Community Building.

The feature, designed by landscape architect Jim Davis, is set to include the map, a tribute to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, a pavilion, flags and the bronze plaques that were once housed in the community building.

And while the cost of the memorial is being offset by funds that came in as a result of the fire that saw the community building lost, construction of it won't begin until the trustees are sure that if people have been left out -- or added to the list falsely -- that those issues are resolved.

"We want to make sure we get this thing right," trustee Ed Borden said before the first time he and his colleagues asked Wayne residents for their help. "Having all the names is going to be really important."

There is little to no information currently on record for the following sons of Wayne who died in combat. Anyone with details regarding them -- hometown, date of death, next of kin -- is asked to contact News-Argus military affairs reporter Kenneth Fine at 739-7841 or e-mail kfine@newsargus.com

Information collected will be passed on to the trustees and used to help create the Wayne Veterans Memorial.
