PIKEVILLE -- This year's Pikeville Summer Blast in the Park has special meaning to it, organizers of the event say.
"This year it's a little bit more special because it falls on Sept. 11, so we want to do a remembrance and thank you for all EMS, firefighters, police and military," said Town Clerk Michelle Singleton.
Congressman Walter Jones will open the event, which runs from 4-9 p.m. Saturday at Dees Memorial Park. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard and the Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Department Honor Guard will also be a part of the opening ceremony.
Throughout the evening there will be live music and entertainment and games for children including inflatables and horseback rides. For the adults, there will be a "Car Cruise In."
"It's kind of like a car show," Mrs. Singleton said. "Everybody just brings their cars that they want to show off."
Also at the event will be vendors selling crafts and food including hot dogs, nachos, chips and homemade french fries, which are a new addition this year.
The festivities will culminate with a fireworks display at 9 p.m.
The Pikeville Committee Club organized the event and is using money raised from last year's Blast in the Park to fund this year's event.
"When we did the first Summer Blast it was a huge success and people asked us to do it again," Mrs. Singleton said. "It's a nice, family friendly, safe environment. The kids can come out, games are free, entertainment is free, the Car Cruise In is free."
She added that the event is also a good way for neighbors to get out and get to know one another better.
"It's a great chance to meet and greet people that you may not know," she said. "I encourage everybody to come out. It's going to be a nice evening of good fellowship and entertainment."
