A Goldsboro man has died from injuries he received after being struck by a car as he walked along U.S. 117 Alternate South late Friday night.
Michael David Smith, 40, of Buttercup Lane was walking along the roadway near Ash Street just before 10:30 p.m. Friday when he apparently stepped into traffic and was struck by a vehicle operated by Tiffany Mills, 26, of Overman Road.
Police said Smith, who was wearing dark clothing, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms. Mills told police she got a glimpse of something in the road just before her windshield shattered. She called 911 and said that she thought she had hit someone.
Officers found Smith's body about 50 feet off of the roadway.
The speed limit is 50 miles per hour along that section of road and police estimated that Ms. Mills' vehicle was not speeding.
No charges are expected at this time, police said.
