Summit set to discuss graduation

The public is invited to attend "Graduate Wayne County," a free summit being held on Monday at Mount Olive College.

This is an opportunity for parents and guardians, business people and anyone interested in a successful education system, as well as reducing the dropout rate.

The event is being sponsored by Communities In Schools of Wayne County, the County of Wayne, Goldsboro Family YMCA, N.C. Cooperative Extension Service, Parent Teacher Association, Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and Wayne County Public Schools established a planning committee.

While admission is free, lunch will be available in the school's cafeteria for $5.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Keynote speaker will be Sen. Don Davis of the N.C. 5th district.

At 10:15 a.m., four 2010 graduates will present their graduation projects.

There will also be a panel discussion on the topic, "What Does it Take to Graduate?" featuring area principals and counselors.

Throughout the day, exhibitors will have tables set up, providing information about their organization or agency.

Afternoon breakout sessions will feature presentations on meeting the challenges of getting Spanish-speaking parents involved in their child's education, adaptive technology to diagnose student performance and progress, agricultural education, business academy concept, high school reform at the alternative school, meeting the graduation requirements, New Schools Project, graduation coaches, WorkKeys, allied health academy, freshman academy, student involvement in athletics and extra-curricular activities, tutoring and mentoring and graduation projects.
