Eight Wayne County students were part of this year's graduating class at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics.

The Class of 2010, which had 301 members, represented all 13 North Carolina congressional districts and nearly 70 of the state's counties, officials said.

The school opened in 1980 as the first of its kind -- a public, residential high school where students study on a specialized curriculum emphasizing science and mathematics.

Recent graduates from Wayne County and the schools they had transferred from includ Justice Bucher, Ung Choi, Ami Sueki, Schereeya Taylor and Katherine Waller, all from Eastern Wayne High School; Josh Chappell and Kenneth Pass, from Southern Wayne; and Andrew Hicks, from Spring Creek High School.

Bucher, Hicks and Ms. Waller plan to attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall, while Chappell, Choi and Ms. Sueki will attend N.C. State University. Pass will be a student at Morehouse College and Taylor has been accepted at Washington and Lee.
