Fathers are encouraged to spend Saturday with their kids at Herman Park.

Nicholas Worrell, director of WAGES' Male Involvement Program, called "A Day at the Park" an opportunity for dads to enjoy some quality time with their children. From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., there will be free food, fun and games provided.

"We're really excited about it and we're looking forward to having a lot of parents," he said.

The event is an offshoot of the Male Involvement program, introduced nearly a decade ago, Worrell said.

Designed as a support group of sorts, they typically meet two evenings a month at the WAGES office on Royall Avenue.

At any one time, between 40 and 50 fathers may attend, Worrell said.

In addition to sharing concerns that accompany raising children, he said the program is designed to improve their parenting skills.

"It's also geared toward helping fathers become more stable for their families," he explained. "We help with GED classes, getting information as far as child support, jobs and classes."

Whether single, married or divorced, fathers are welcome to participate in the Male Involvement program and can call 734-1178, ext. 244 for more information.

Saturday's "Day in the Park" is open to the public, said Worrell, who suggested participants call in advance to confirm attendance. Contact number is 736-4102.
