Wayne Community College will receive more than $500,000 in Workforce Investment Act money through the Eastern North Carolina Workforce Development Board.

The college will receive $209,614 for adult programs and $344,846 for dislocated worker programs.

Greene Lamp, which serves seven counties, including Wayne, will get $292,007 to serve youth.

A total of $3 million was received by the the regional board, which operates in nine counties. The money will be used to pay for education and skills training for about 1,500 qualified residents.

"Training proposals were selected based upon the service provider's experience and effectiveness in delivering high-quality employment and training opportunities that result in employment, job retention, and good earning potential for jobs in demand in eastern North Carolina," said Tammy Childers, executive director for the board.

Training needs and skill shortages were identified in health care, education, child care, construction work, skilled trades, emerging green jobs, aviation, aerospace and advanced manufacturing," she noted.

"We want our citizens to know that employment and training opportunities are available to them through the network of local JobLink Career Centers, which operate in all counties," said Mona Padrick, chairman of the workforce development board and the president of the Jacksonville/Onslow Chamber of Commerce.

The workforce development board is a non-profit organization located in New Bern and the designated administrative and fiscal agent for the federal and state workforce development funds appropriated by the state Department of Commerce to provide employment and training services in Carteret, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Onslow, Pamlico, and Wayne counties.
