WARSAW -- Three Duplin agencies will join to put the spotlight on nutrition and physical activity at a free summer day camp for youth.

The Duplin County Health Department, Warsaw Middle School and the Duplin Family and Consumer Sciences office of the Extension Service are collaborating to sponsor a free summer nutition and exercise day camp for youth being held in Warsaw.

The project has the support of a $1,000 grant from the Family and Consumer Sciences Foundation at N.C. State University.

Duplin Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent Wanda Clay said the camp will be designed for children ages 11 through 13, which is the age group with the highest percentage of overweight children.

It will be paid for through a grant from the Family and Consumer Sciences Foundation at North Carolina State University.,

Clay, Dr. Errol Davis, who is the WIC director and nutritionist at the Duplin County Health Department, and Warsaw Middle School Principal Dr. Leon Kea will organize the programming to address the youth obesity issue.

The focus of the camp is to increase each youth's consumption of fruits and vegetables and knowledge to make healthy food choices, to increase physical activity, to provide knowledge for understanding food labels, and to promote an increase of water consumption.

The camp will be held weekdays, Aug. 2-13, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Warsaw Middle School.

The registration limit is 15. Registration is open to any Duplin youth in the age group, with service on a first-come basis. Youth 11-13 years of age may be enrolled by their parents or guardian by contacting Principle Kea at the middle school office or by phone at (910) 293-7997, or call Ms. Clay at the Extension office at (910) 296-2143 to receive enrollment documents by mail.
