Goldsboro firefighters respond this morning to a fire along John Street involving a suspected stolen Dodge Durango and a train car.

A stolen SUV was found demolished by fire near the train tracks on the 1000 block of South John Street this morning, causing a blaze that also damaged a train car filled with railroad ties, authorities said.

Goldsboro Police C-Shift Capt. Theresa Chiero said that police were not sure if the truck, a 2006 Dodge Durango, had been driven into the train car.

"We're not sure if it crashed into the train car or not. It did catch fire," Capt. Chiero said.

The SUV was reported stolen early this morning by Chester Williams of Cashwell Drive, who said he was robbed at gunpoint around 1:05 a.m. today.

Williams told police that two unidentified black males took the truck and some cash from him in the 300 block of South Leslie Street.

The only description of the suspects provided was that one male was around 5 feet 7 inches tall, the captain said.

The fire on South John Street totally demolished the Dodge SUV, Capt. Chiero said.

"It was completely demolished. It was down to the frame," Chiero said, adding that it was impossible to take fingerprints from the burned-out vehicle.

Chiero said that police do not yet have a damage estimate for either the SUV or the railroad car full of ties, while investigation continues.

"I guess all the railroad ties are no good at this point, because they were all on fire," Chiero said.
